Software Skills

I have taken it upon myself this year to familiarise myself with software that I didn't know. This included primarily Revit as it is a programme often required when applying for architectural jobs. Revit challenged me to think about the structural composition of my scheme allowing me to identify any issues at the start of the developed design. Using a BIM model facilitated the production of drawings as any changes done to the design were automatically updated in the rest of the model. This offered a considerable change for me as, when using SketchUp, I always had to update a separate set of drawings independently. Working on Draper Farm this year, I believe I have found a good balance between using SketchUp for testing quick, basic design ideas which were later modelled properly in Revit using appropriate structural components.
Having completed the base model in Revit, I have exported it into SketchUp to add finishing touches as well as preferred materiality. Using V-Ray for SketchUp I was able to produce a series of visuals explaining the scheme. Lumion was another software used to produce visuals as well as 3D animations of the scheme. Lumion allowed me to obtain overviews of the proposal which were then edited in AfterEffects to add any text/audio.

I believe that I have challenged myself this year to invest time both in my coursework as well as personal development in a variety of new software. This allowed me to push my boundaries and gain confidence in self-development while still satisfying university's coursework requirements. I am hoping to continue developing my software skills during my Part 2 experience where I am hoping to gain even more confidence in my work.
